Self-Understanding
The Institute for Communication & Dignity (ICD) is an independent think tank that brings together science, humanity, and social responsibility. We examine how communication works, where it fails, and how it can be designed in a way that helps people retain access, orientation, and dignity.
We do not understand language merely as a technique, but as a relationship. Not as an instrument of power, but as a foundation of democratic participation. For us, dignity is not an abstract ideal, but a lived practice โ and communication is one of its essential tools.
Mission
Our mission is to identify communication barriers, understand their impact, and develop approaches that empower people rather than leave them behind.
We work to ensure that information is designed in a way that is accessible to everyone โ regardless of educational background, health conditions, or personal circumstances.
The ICD creates clarity where systems become overwhelming.
It provides orientation where language creates division.
And it enables participation where institutions become complex.
Vision
We are working toward a future in which communication does not exclude, but connects. A future in which institutions communicate clearly, act responsibly, and treat people with dignity.
Democracy can only thrive when people understand the issues that affect their lives.
Science remains human when it provides guidance rather than creating distance.
And participation is only possible when information is accessible to everyone, regardless of their individual circumstances or life situation.
Our vision is a society in which language fosters community, strengthens trust, and creates the space where people feel heard, understood, and valued.
Values & Principles
The values and principles of the ICD form the ethical foundation of our work. They define how we think, how we act, and how we understand responsibility.
Dignity
The dignity of every human being is both the starting point and the ultimate goal of our work. It is not an abstract ideal, but a practical standard for every form of communication.
Humanity
We approach people with respect, empathy, and mindfulness. Humanity is the foundation of trust, dialogue, and democratic participation.
Communication
Language is a bridge โ never a barrier. Clear and accessible communication is an expression of respect and a prerequisite for orientation and understanding.
Accessibility
Access is a fundamental democratic principle. Information must be usable and understandable for all people, regardless of their individual circumstances or life situations.
Integrity
Scientific honesty, independence, and transparency guide our work. Integrity is the foundation of credibility and trust.
Responsibility
Communication always carries responsibility โ toward people, institutions, and democracy itself. We identify shortcomings without condemnation and develop solutions without polarization.
Dialogue
Understanding emerges through dialogue. We foster spaces where different perspectives become visible and respectful communication can flourish.
Inclusion
No one should be left behind. Inclusion means designing systems in a way that enables all people to experience access, agency, and meaningful participation.
Transparency
Transparency makes processes understandable and strengthens democratic trust. It is the foundation of responsible communication.
Why the ICD Exists
Our society is facing a growing challenge:
Information is becoming increasingly complex, administrative processes more difficult to navigate, and communication is often designed in ways that many people can no longer easily understand.
What people do not understand, they cannot meaningfully decide upon.
What they cannot decipher, limits their freedom.
Many individuals experience confusion, uncertainty, or exclusion โ not because they lack ability, but because communication is unclear, inaccessible, or misleading.
The ICD exists because democratic participation is only possible when people understand the issues that affect their lives. Communication is never neutral; it always carries responsibility.
We believe that dignity, participation, and social inclusion begin with understanding. Where communication fails, barriers emerge. Where communication succeeds, people gain the ability to participate, make informed decisions, and engage confidently with society and its institutions.
Working Approach & Methodology
The ICD works scientifically, humanely, and pragmatically. Our methodology combines analytical precision with empathy, enabling solutions that are both academically sound and genuinely useful for people in real-world situations.
1. Dignity-Focused Analysis
Every investigation begins with a fundamental question: How does a process, system, or form of communication affect human dignity? This serves as our primary point of reference and evaluation.
2. Interdisciplinary Perspective
We integrate insights from communication studies, medicine, public administration, psychology, ethics, and disability studies in order to understand systems realistically and holistically.
3. Documentation of Real-Life Cases
Real-world case studies serve as an important source of evidence and insight. They reveal where people encounter barriers in everyday life โ and why those barriers exist.
4. Process Reconstruction
We analyze how institutional procedures function and identify the points at which barriers emerge. This allows us to develop a realistic understanding of underlying causes rather than merely addressing symptoms.
5. Dialogue-Based Development
Meaningful solutions emerge through collaboration between affected individuals, professionals, and institutions. We create spaces that encourage constructive dialogue and mutual understanding.
6. Non-Ideological, Solution-Oriented Thinking
Our goal is not polarization, but improvement. We work in a fact-based, responsible, and independent manner, free from political or ideological bias.
7. Continuous Improvement
Models, processes, and communication pathways are tested, refined, and further developed until they genuinely work for the people they are intended to serve.
